This is a review of the 'Stellar Phoenix' data recovery software. The company sells a variety of data recovery solutions including software for Windows, Mac and Linus based operating systems. There are a lot of options and different types of their software on the website, including photo recovery, iPod recovery and password recovery to name a few. This can be a bit confusing and the site itself is quite messy. That being said you can download a free trial of each program to see how it works. The flagship software – Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is what we'll be focusing on here.

The software costs $49 and is easily downloaded and installed. Once you've completed that process you can open up the software and are presented with two options – Recover Files and Folders or Search Drive. The first option allows you to search through your hard drive for files and folders, where as the second option searches through the entire drive thoroughly.

You are also given the choice of two search speeds – quick scan and deep scan, which are self explanatory. The speed of the scan varies depending on which options you choose. The quickest of the scans takes a very small amount of time but the longest scan can take a few hours.

So how effective is 'Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery'? Again this varies depending on the options you choose but on average the software is very good. After a bit of searching we easily found the files that we had deleted and the amount of files that 'Search Drive' option returns is vast. The only problem is knowing which options to use – it can take a bit of experience with the software to get the results you need and sometimes the software returns too many unnecessary files that you'll of never heard of. This can be confusing.

The software also includes help documentation and contact details on the website to get any questions you have answered.

All in all, 'Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery' is a decent program with a robust search engine at a reasonable price. The only problem is the slight tedium of working out which options to use when searching, which could be improved on. The confusion that comes with this software is the only thing stopping it ranking higher.
